The Three Tires You Need to Know for ATV Riding

ATVs can be equipped with a wide range of tires suited for a wide range of terrain. Below we cover the three most common quad tires that even beginners should consider investing in. All Terrain

These tires are the standard option on four wheelers. They are the general, basic model that is not tailored for one type of turf in particular. This is in contrast to the other, following tires that are focused on delivering high performance to one type of terrain (which gives you lower performance, then, on other types of terrain). There is still some variance among all terrain options. For example, you may find one that offers better traction for muddy conditions, but it will still be broad enough to handle other terrain (such as rocky riding). Equipping ATVs with these tires helps provide the greatest range of success on everything from soft ground to hard turf. It's recommended that all quad owners have one set of these.

Sand Tires

As the name implies, these tires are well-suited for sand. They are also commonly called paddle tires due to their distinctive paddle type ridges. These tires are made for giving ideal traction on sand, which can be a difficult surface to ride on. Loose sand shifts all too easily under the weight of a heavy 4 wheeler. To adjust for this, a paddle tire is designed to push the sand backwards and give the quad traction. It's not all that different from how a steam boat moves up the water.

While this option is ideal for riding on soft turf, it doesn't function well on more firm and tough ground. In fact, if you head out on turf that isn't sand, you could actually damage and destroy the tire. Keep these tires on the soft terrain they are designed for and you'll have a smooth ride.

Mud Tires

This option is ideal for turf that is muddy and watery. This type of ground poses a challenge because it tends to lack a uniform texture. These tires are adapted to handle ground that is soft or somewhat firm. Their oversized knobs allow them to grab large swaths of terrain deeply, giving you the stability you need to push through the ground.

One advantage of this option is they also work well in snowy and slushy conditions, giving you greater versatility with the types of terrain you can take your quad out on. The well defined lugs provide even weight distribution. Using mud tires instead of all-terrain ones on the snow will give your ATV much better stability and make for a more enjoyable ride.

These tires suffer the same drawback as sand tires. If you take them on terrain that the aren't suited for, it can cause damage. Avoid taking your 4 wheeler out on hard terrain if you are equipped with these tires.
