Apartment vs. Neighborhood

If you live in an apartment complex, be aware that this is a common location for motorcycle theft. In this type of setting, people are constantly coming and going which makes it a lot easier for thieves to blend in and scope out their target. What’s worse, apartment parking lots or structures are often not secure and left unattended all hours of the day. Unless your complex offers top-notch parking security that you feel comfortable with, you’ll want to be very careful about where you park your bike.

While there are certain added safety features when owning a home, there are still theft threats that you need to look out for. Thieves tend to lurk around the area to observe any safety measures being taken to protect the home. In wealthier neighborhoods, people tend to think that there is no threat of crime and therefore are more complacent when it comes to security. This is another thing that thieves look for, so you should never assume you’re in the clear.

Parking

Identifying possible threats to your bike is essential for improving security. A motorcycle that is resting comfortably in plain sight in the driveway is like a dog with a bone for a thief. A garage is the best place to park your bike because there is no longer a direct line of sight. Fenced yards can offer a good level of protection as well.

If you’re living in an apartment, do your best to park your bike in full view of any security cameras in the area. You might also want to park near a structure so you can chain your bike to it. There are covers available for your motorcycle, too, which can often deter thieves. If you’re in a downtown area, you should try to avoid streets with high amounts of cover that thieves can use. Definitely do not let your bike sit there overnight, either.

Locks and Chains

Investing in high-quality locks and chains are great for deterring thieves. Locks and chains with multiple levels of security can often cause them to give up entirely. Steering locks secure the steering column, which prevents the thief from moving the bike. Disc locks clamp to the disc brakes to prevent the wheels from spinning. You may also want to get saddlebags with locks to protect your gear. If you choose chains, make sure they’re hooked to a non-removable part of the bike.

Electronic Security

Fortunately, there are a wide variety of electronic security methods that can help secure your motorcycle. Alarm systems are great for calling attention to the theft and potentially scaring the thief away from your bike. If the thief is a pro, it’s possible they could disable an electronic security system.

You can also choose to install a tracking system on your bike. Local law enforcement can retrieve the location of your bike. Never try to confront the thief on your own because they could easily be armed and dangerous. Always go right to the police!

Regardless of what type of electronic security you choose, you’ll want to make sure it is not easy to spot. A thief can easily figure out how to disarm electronic security, especially if it is mounted in plain sight on the motorcycle.
