Unfortunately we can’t always take our dirt bikes out to the trail or racecourse. When temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, your dirt bike should already be in storage! Our team at Peak Powersports LLC is here to guide you through winterization and seasonal preparations.

1. Choose a Location

The first part of properly storing your dirt bike is determining where you can keep it out of the elements. If you don’t have a shed or garage to keep your bike in, you might need to invest in a good cover, one that won’t trap excess moisture and condensation; be wary of the material you choose. Wherever or however you decide to store your bike, it should be protected from extreme temperatures and moisture.

2. Perform Maintenance Tasks Now

Once you have a plan for where you’ll put your dirt bike in the off season, it’s time to focus on the bike itself. You should complete an inspection and perform any critical repairs before you put your model in storage. This will prevent the problem from getting any worse and it will help you pull your dirt bike out of storage more quickly in the spring!

You should focus on more than the critical tasks, though. Complete an oil change, lubricate moving parts, and air up the tires now.

3. Use a Lift

Your kickstand won’t be enough in the winter months. You should keep your dirt bike on a stand while it’s in storage to avoid warping the tires. If possible, rotate the wheels every week or so to keep them in good condition!

4. Start Your Engine, If You’ll Let It Run

Starting your engine during the winter months is a good way to keep it in optimal condition, but if you don’t allow the engine to actually heat up to appropriate temperatures, your effort will be fruitless. It’s better to never start the engine over the winter than to start it and only let it run for a few minutes.

Winterizing and storing your dirt bike doesn't need to be complicated, but it’s essential to do it the right way. Visit us in Sheridan, WY, to schedule your next service visit and stock up on the parts you need. We proudly serve the Buffalo area.
