Most people think that all-terrain vehicles, known commonly as ATVs, are only meant for off-road use. However, with a few modifications, your ATV can be made street legal. Not all ATVs are ready for paved-road usage, but with a few tweaks, you can ride your ATV around your neighborhood and use it to run local errands.

Disclaimer Alert!

All states have different laws around how to make an off-road vehicle street legal. We’ve compiled information based on Wyoming law, but if you don’t live in Wyoming, or if you plan to ride in other parts of the country, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the appropriate state laws. You should also check out any local ordinances relevant to your area.

Safety Features

First, you will need to add some safety features, such as a horn, brake lights, and mirrors. All of these features show up on other motorized vehicles for a reason, and while they often don’t come with an ATV when you first buy one, you’ll need to add them.

License and Registration

Per Wyoming law, your ATV should already be registered, but now you’ll need special licensing to operate your ATV on the road. This may come in the form of an MPV permit or an ORV permit. You’re also going to need a license plate for the ATV and a valid driver’s license before hitting the road.

And that’s just the start! For a full run-down of how to make your ATV street legal, ask one of our technicians about important upgrades.
