A dirt bike is a lean, mean, adrenaline machine. But part of what makes an off-road motorcycle fun also makes them risky. After all, you are riding at high speeds in the backwoods. A little proactivity helps you prevent some safety situations and reduce the severity of others. We rounded up the top dirt bike safety tips below. If you need any dirt bike maintenance or are looking to buy, visit Peak Powersports LLC. We proudly serve those in Buffalo, Wyoming.

Attire

Your likelihood of crashing on a dirt bike is much higher than other forms of transportation (such as a car). You are also much more exposed, so the crashes can get severe. Dress as if you are planning to get into a crash. That way, if the worst happens you'll be protected.

You'll need a helmet of course. But it's not enough to simply throw on a helmet. It needs to be less than five years old (the binding starts falling apart after five years). It needs to fit well (an ill-fitting one won't give the proper protection). And it needs to be comfortable (otherwise, you won't wear it).

Next, you'll need a form of eye protection. If your helmet comes with a visor, you're covered. If not, find a pair of goggles. They will keep dust, dirt, and kicked-up debris from getting lodged in your eyes.

Next, you'll want the proper clothing. You'll want to wear full-length clothing that covers your skin. It'll give a layer of protection from the sun to help limit sunburns. You can find lightweight breathable clothing to avoid getting too hot while you ride your dirt bike.

Finally, you'll want a pair of motorcycle riding gloves. These help you maintain control of your dirt bike. Hands that are wet from rain or sweat will struggle to grip the controls. Gloves help you manipulate your controls with ease.

Sticking Inside the Limits

Many safety situations arise when people go beyond limits. Sometimes it's going beyond their driving limits. Never operate a dirt bike that is more powerful than you can handle, for example. Don't head out on trails that are beyond your ability to navigate. Slowly build up your skills and don't overextend yourself.

Sometimes, people go beyond their motorcycle's ability. They deviate from the developed path and venture into uncharted territory. But there's a reason the trail exists. Anything else could be full of hazards such as a sudden dip or drop in the road. When you're cruising around at high speeds, those hidden issues can result in a crash. You end up hurting yourself, your dirt bike, or both - and it could've been avoided by just staying on the trail.

Reduce Risk

You can't fully eliminate the risk of riding an off-road motorcycle. But you can take steps to reduce some of the risks with the riding choices you make. First, avoid heading out when the weather is bad such as snow or rain. Second, head home long before the dark night sets in. Third, limit riding on paved roads. Dirt bikes aren't built to handle this terrain and usually aren't equipped with the proper lighting or safety features. Make smart choices and you can enjoy a fun, but safe, off-road motorcycle ride!
