ATV Maintenance Tools

ATV Maintenance Tools Article from Peak Powersports

One easy way to keep yourself safe when you’re off-roading is to stick to a regular maintenance schedule for your ATV. Just like a car or any other vehicle, ATVs have plenty of moving parts that need adjustment, tires that need to be in good condition and fluids that need to be topped up and changed regularly. If you’re looking to save some money and have the expertise to do minor repairs yourself, there are some tools you should have in your garage to help you work on your ATV to keep it in great condition.

At Peak Powersports in Sheridan, Wyoming, we know a thing or two about ATV maintenance, so we’ve created this list of the most important tools you’ll want to have in your ATV tool kit. If you have any major maintenance concerns or need parts for your ATV, call our dealership to schedule a service appointment with our capable mechanics.

Tire Pressure Gauge & Air Compressor

Your tires support your whole ATV, so it’s vital that they stay in good shape. Part of this involves maintaining equal pressure over all four of them so that no one tire is taking undue strain, increasing your chances of a blowout when you’re riding. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure on your tires at least once a week or more if you use your ATV often. Look at the treads to see that they’re wearing evenly and that nothing is embedded in them.

The air compressor is simply to inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s suggested pressurization after you check them with your tire gauge. This tool can be useful in other aspects of your home and professional life, though, since they can be used for things like painting houses and keeping your bike or car tires inflated, too.

Wrenches

A great set of wrenches is essential to most tool kits and they can be passed on for others to use if they’re high quality. ATVs and UTVs often have parts measured in metric, so you should invest in both metric and standard wrench sets. Sometimes you can save a little cash by purchasing these together. You want to have crescent wrenches, allen wrenches and socket grips at hand, as well.

Set of Sockets

Socket wrenches are a different style of wrench that you will also need for ATV maintenance. They make removing nuts and bolts easier and are less likely to damage your paint job. Socket wrenches work faster than normal wrenches, which can make your work go by more quickly. You should get some ratchets in different sizes to go with your socket set.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are important in most tool kits and an ATV kit is no different. Several sizes are necessary, and you should look for ones that are well-made and have a comfortable ergonomic grip.

Torque Wrench

A torque wrench is a useful tool for when you get more involved in your ATV’s mechanical workings. These wrenches apply very precise amounts of pressure to the fasteners on your ATV, so they’re particularly of use when it comes to the parts of your engine that are under heavy force.

Breaker Bar

Breaker bars are a great alternative to normal wrenches when you have a fastener that just won’t come off. They’re similar enough to normal wrenches, while having a much longer handle to give you the needed leverage to unstick those difficult fasteners.

Mallet

A wooden or urethane mallet will be gentle enough not to damage the coatings on your ATV while providing you with the force you might need to apply to certain parts of your vehicle. Obviously, you should use a mallet with caution, but if you use it correctly, it’s a very handy tool.

Multimeter

Finally, a multimeter will let you measure the electrical conductivity on your ATV, whether that’s resistance, amperage or voltage. This handheld device will let you know why your ATV’s electrical system isn’t performing well. You can also use it around the house on other electrical systems.

Don’t forget -- if you need repairs performed on your ATV that you can’t do yourself, let our service department take care of that for you. You can also come down to our showroom to see the great ATVs we have in stock, both new and used. Peak Powersports serves the city of Sheridan, Wyoming.
